What is lighting?

Lighting is key element in interior design as it creates the mood and ambience of a living space. Without proper lighting interior design cannot be experienced to the fullest. Good lighting can create a warm, inviting and functional atmosphere in your home. Therefore, selection of proper lighting is the essential element in interior design as it enhances everything in a room - from the furniture, flooring, fittings to the finishes and textures.

Colour management

Lighting have a huge relationship with colours. Light colours make a room feel bigger and spacious, while darker colours walls do the opposite. The angle of light can make the room look wider and higher. Furthermore, directional lighting such as track light can highlight the wall colour. While the recessed downlight which has a soft, downward glow that focus on the floors, not walls.

Directional lighting

Directional lighting can be used to highlight specific elements such as wall painting or kitchen island to create focal points for the space. Track lighting is the perfect example of directional lighting. Use recessed lighting in floors and ceilings can create vertical beams of light as opposed to an overall glow from central light fixtures hanging from a ceiling.

Functionality

Lighting needs to serve a purpose for the space, or else it just simply wastes electricity. Wall lights not just provide illumination for the space but also can make the space look bigger and taller. Look into task-specific lighting for desks and other work areas where functionality is more important than overall room illumination.
